Setareh Noorani and Emanuel Admassu discuss the transformative power of friendship and collaboration in Episode 01 of “Between Us.” In a conversation guided by Shumi Bose, they explore how that same sense of horizontality might shape the concept of reparations—all the while considering the importance of accountability, of reframing the hegemonic hierarchies that still govern so much of our world, and of caring for ourselves and each other while working toward collective liberation.
Emanuel Admassu is an Assistant Professor at Columbia GSAPP and a founding partner of AD—WO, an art and architecture practice in NYC. His work focuses on design theory, spatial justice, and contemporary African art, studying Afrodiasporic spaces.
Setareh Noorani is a curator at the Nieuwe Instituut, focusing on decoloniality, feminisms, queer ecologies, and non-institutional representations in architecture. She has contributed to projects around the world, including Collecting Otherwise and Feminist Design Strategies, and served on the curatorial team of the London Design Biënnale 2023.
