Met het kunstproject Nimmanslân / No Man’s Land opent het kunstenaarsduo SMET dit najaar in de Leeuwarder wijk Heechterp, op de Beukenstraat 36a, een kunstruimte voor de buurt. In een leegstaand appartement, dat binnenkort plaats zal maken voor nieuwbouw, brengen zij een programma over de geschiedenis van de wijk en haar bewoners en hoe zij hun heden en toekomst kunnen vormgeven door het toe-eigenen van ruimte. Deze woning, als tijdelijk “niemandsland”, toont niet alleen de kloof tussen het oude en het onzekere vooruitzicht van de wijkbewoners, maar laat ook de kracht en mogelijkheden zien van een tussenruimte; datgeen dat tussenbeide valt en weigert te conformeren. In oktober organiseert SMET workshops om verhalen en beelden van de wijk te verzamelen rondom deze thema’s, en in november wordt de woning opengesteld voor publiek als project- en tentoonstellingsruimte.

With the art project Nimmanslân / No Man’s Land, the artist duo SMET will open an art space for the neighborhood this fall in Leeuwarden’s Heechterp neighborhood, at Beukenstraat 36a. In an empty apartment, soon to make way for new construction, they will present a program about the history of the neighborhood and its residents and how they can shape their present and future by appropriating space. This home, as a temporary “no man’s land,” not only shows the gap between the old and the uncertain prospect of neighborhood residents, but also demonstrates the power and possibilities of an in-between space; that which falls between and refuses to conform. In October, SMET will host workshops to gather stories and images of the neighborhood around these themes, and in November, the house will open to the public as a project and exhibition space.
